• Saudi Arabia: top ministers were sacked, giving yet more power to the Crown Prince. Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) conducted a purge of many high-ranking princes, functionaries and businessmen. Trump Tweeted his support for this ‘anti-corruption’ campaign. The oil price rose and many rumours swirled but it appears that MBS has strengthened his position, absent some old-guard rear-action. 

  • Middle East: Saudi Arabia accused Iran of arming Houthis in Yemen with missiles, one of which was intercepted near Riyadh airport. The transfer of such missiles is being referred to as an act of war. The Lebanese PM, Hariri, resigned saying that he feared an assassination plot, while denouncing Iran in very strong terms. The U.S. released papers purporting to show a link between Al Qaeda and Iran. 

  • Paradise Leaks: the latest offshore leak comes from a law firm based in Bermuda and has been analyzed by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The ICIJ has alleged that U.S. Commerce Secretary Ross benefits from business ties to Putin’s inner circle. Another allegation states that Kremlin-linked firms invested large sums in Facebook and Twitter, raising new questions.
