Some in the markets wish EU political risk away, however, the underlying dynamics of the union make this impossible. Centrists won in key countries during 2017 but that does not mean the citizens are happy with their performance – just more unhappy with alternatives provided. Three existential crises haunt the EU, all with separate timings and underlying drivers but they point towards a more illiberal club in future.
