The central dilemma for Japan is whether it should resist or placate China’s rise and associated changes in relative power. The U.S. alliance is the cornerstone of Japanese strategic thinking but Trump’s rhetoric and behaviour has given pause for thought. It would make sense for Japan to join the AIIB, and potentially get involved in One-Belt-One-Road, but its geopolitical room to move towards China is limited.
